On the question of price

Yes, we cost more.

You'll find cheaper bookshelves. MDF flatpacks for £30. Pine shelves for £60. And they'll do the job — for a year or two, until the joints soften, the surface chips, or the whole thing goes in a skip during a bedroom refresh.

Our shelves are solid ash. Dovetail joinery. Finished by hand in our Cardiff workshop. They arrive fully assembled and they last — not just through childhood, but beyond it.

  • From around 12 months, when children begin showing interest in books, through to school age and beyond. The front-facing display works at any age — many parents keep their Story Shelf on the wall well into primary school years, simply rotating the book selection as their child grows.
  • Solid ash is a hardwood — it won't chip, warp, or soften at the joints the way MDF and softwood shelves do over time. The interlocking dovetail joints lock together and are glued for a permanent, solid bond — no brackets or screws to work loose. A shelf that lasts beyond childhood.
  • Yes, fully. Every shelf leaves our Cardiff workshop assembled and ready to mount. All you need is a drill and the included fixings. Most customers have theirs on the wall within fifteen minutes of opening the box.
  • Each shelf is handmade to order, so please allow 5–10 working days. We don't hold stock — your shelf is made when you order it, which is part of what makes each one individual. Free UK delivery on all orders.
  • Yes. Klarna is available at checkout, letting you spread the cost interest-free. A 60cm shelf works out at under £13/month over six months — less than most people spend on books to go on it.
  • Construction, size options, and price are identical. The only difference is aesthetic — The Story Shelf has a natural ash front bar, while the Colour Pop version has a hand-painted front bar in your choice of eleven colours. Both come in Natural Wood or painted finish for the body.
